about
This year, Central Australian singer-songwriter Paul Ah Chee releases his debut solo EP,
Nowhere To Hide
, a six-track compilationstraight from the heart.
Paul began his music journey as a young boy and in due course he formed the renowned Mparntwe/Alice Springs band,AMUNDA, in the late 80s. Over the ten-year period, the band enjoyed great success performing at major national festivalsincluding Big Day Out, Sing Loud Play Strong, Survival, Barunga, Adelaide Fringe, Port Fairy and Moomba Festival, where theyeventually disbanded in 1997. After this, Paul took a hiatus from music, settling down in the Red Centre to support his family, community and land, until his passions were reignited in 2019. His desire to resurrect his music journey has led to the 12th ofJuly 2021 release of his EP through his independent record label, Ngala Music.
Best described as Contemporary Australian Soulful Rock,
Nowhere To Hide
features Paul’s talents as a powerfully evocative lyricist,
singer, guitarist and composer. In this record, Paul looks deeply at the struggles of depression and anxiety, drawing on personaland collective experiences of suicide in his communities, coming to terms with his own journey as someone who has faced alifetime of adversity. Paul reflects on attachment and connection to land, identity and experiences of trauma, finding ways toreframe and express these in a positive light. The record is a tribute to understanding where you have come from to moveforward, presenting yourself as you are – with nowhere to hide.
This record brings together a spectacular ensemble of local and international artists, working in collaboration to deliver the visionand passions of Paul’s journey. It features Grammy Award winners Daniel Jauregui (producer), Lee Levin (drummer) and DanielEspinoza (ensemble), as well as a host of interdisciplinary musicians from the Centre including Dave Crowe, Edward Gould, Xaviaand more. It’s a hybrid mix of music with evocative string sections from Espinoza's Florida ensemble, dramatic brass sections, piano and backing vocals. Together they create a sound reminiscent of a moody Rolling Stones, supported by lyrics that ring deepand true.
The record is currently available for purchase through Paul’s website as a digital download, vinyl and CD, with 10% of all salesgoing towards Beyond Blue to support anxiety, depression and suicide prevention.
Nowhere To Hide
can only be purchasedthrough the website and is not available on any streaming platforms. Paul will be launching the EP live in Melbourne inSeptember, pending COVID19 restrictions.
Paul would like to express his lifelong acknowledgement of and respect to the traditional custodians on whose land we walk, work and live. May the stories and culture that weave across this land never be forgotten.
